Well Hurricane Sandy blew into New England today. The storm was well hyped by the media and many were well prepared, including ourselves. School was closed for the kids and with the brunt of the storm not reaching us until later this afternoon I set off for work with the promise that I would return home early afternoon before the weather turned worse.
I took the truck, threw the chainsaw and some fuel in the tonneau cover, and set off for work. I was hoping the threat of inclement weather would scare off some of my fellow commuter who make the Monday morning commute down I-93 and wouldn’t you know it they stayed home! It seems like forever since I have had a speed limit ride on a Monday morning heading into work. Despite the intermittent rain and occasional gust of wind the commute was uneventful. Even the ride home was painless, a little more windy, but still pleasant with no delays. I have to the thank all the “non-essential” government workers that were asked to stay home by the governor, I really think they made the commute.
Once home we had a good two to three hours with the kids before we lost power. It was still daylight so we gathered up the flashlights and wind up radio and started to get ready for a night without power. After checking the power company’s website we discovered that we were one of a few hundred people without power in our town and with the weather pretty calm, we decided to take one last run to scrounge up a couple bags of ice and some easy dinner for the kids. Amazingly very few people lost power and we were able to grab some ice and dinner pretty easily. To top it off, when we arrived home the power was on.
I think we lucked out, but we will see what the next couple days of weather hold for us. We were pretty well prepared given all the hype of the storm and I am glad we haven’t really had to rough it. With “Snowtober” last year and Hurricane Sandy this October, I can’t wait to see what happens next year in October!
