Bedford Fire Department Open House

Last Tuesday after work we gathered the kids up and went to the Bedford Fire Department’s Open House. This is a yearly event with all sorts of neat activities and learning opportunities for the kids about fire safety. There is a great write up on the open house on the NH.com website and a video of what its all about at the event on the Bedford Fire Department’s website.

This was our first time and we went after dinner so it was dark out. As you can imagine the highlight of the evening was the fire truck rides!

Our kids, and yes, even I enjoyed the fire truck ride around the loop in the business park behind the public safety building. This was no ordinary ride, because not only did you have the sound of the diesel engine, but you also had the full compliment of lights and sirens. To top it off the kids even got to operate the sirens! My son got to ride shotgun with his mom up front while I had our little guy in the jump seat in back. My oldest enjoyed pushing the sirens and air horns so much he ran the air tank out of air on one of the sirens.

We had a great time and there were a lot of educational booths and information for adults and children. Our kids were a little young for some of the stuff, but the fire engine rides were awesome for kids of all ages, and it was even fun for us adults too.

It was fun to get out and meet some of the people who we otherwise may not meet unless we were in an emergency situation. Everyone was nice, and great with the kids. A big thank-you to all the policeman, fireman, and rescue personnel that made this event possible. We all had a great time!
