Garden Update – June 24, 2012

Just a quick progress report on where this year’s attempt at gardening is coming in.  Being the third season of gardening we still have a lot to learn about our site and the process of gardening.  We have some plants that are doing better than we would have expected and others that have started off great only to have petered out on us.  I have been noticing that many of our vegetables are about 1-2weeks behind where they should be based on planting dates, this is the first year that I am keeping track of details like this so I am not sure if it is typical or not just yet.  Below is a small collection from around the garden.

My pepper plants seem to be going well.  I planted them outside from seed and have a total of 12 bell peppers and 3 hot pepper plants.  One of the hot pepper plants did not quite make it.  These are in my small greenhouse and because of my late start I hope the greenhouse will keep them warm later into the season when fruiting in late September.

Our peas have several pods now, and the squash plants I got from my brother-in-law are starting to fruit!

The giant pumpkins are growing fast, hopefully my watermelons in the right-most box will start to experience the same growth.

We have a couple varieties of lettuce that are starting to exhibit some good growth as well.  With any luck we will have enough lettuce for more than one salad this year.

Thanks – the wife and kids made those for my birthday. She found the idea on pinterest and I think they are a little more classy than the wood markers and so far the rocks are holding up much better to the weather and watering.
