The Great Garlic Mystery

This is my first year growing garlic and this morning I noticed one of my garlic plants, which just so happened to be the most mature, had bent over like something had brushed it over.  Upon further investigation later that evening my wife noticed that there was what appeared to be a mini garlic clove at the site of the bend.  This being are first attempt at garlic, we were stunned to see this.  I am curious to see if anyone has heard or experienced this before.  A quick Google of the topic did not reveal any good results.  I may need to refine my search.

A more serious answer, upon a closer look at your photo. When garlic grows scapes, it sends them up from the bulb, up all the way through the stem and out the middle. I’m guessing that when this garlic sent the scape up, it saw daylight and assumed it had reached the top. Or else it got stuck in the bent place and couldn’t keep going up. That little garlic bulb in there is probably the scape’s bulbil doing what they do…making tiny “garlic seed” cloves.
