New Compost Bin – Part 2

I was able to take Friday off and enjoy the unsettled weather.  We had everything from fog, overcast skies, thunder showers, and bright sunshine with temps in the mid-70’s.

When it was not raining, I was working on finishing up the compost bin.  I started the morning off right with an iced coffee from Dunkin’s and a trip to my local Lowe’s for supplies to create the removable fronts for my compost bins.

I bought six pieces of 5/4” x 6” PT decking and two 2×2 PT strips.  I cut to length 3 pieces of the decking and 4 pieces of the 2×2’s to be used on the front of the 3 vertical sections of the bins.  These pieces of wood create a slot where the front slats for the bin will sit.

The next step was to notch out the front slats to allow for some air movement from the front of the bin.  It also dresses up the front of the bins too.  This probably took the most time to layout and cut.  I held the notch off each end 5-1/2” and cut a 1-1/2” notch with a couple of diagonal cuts at each end. My circular saw did the bulk of the cutting and the skill saw was great for finishing the cuts.  Once you cut the first slat you can use it for your template for all the other slats.

After I had a few slats cut I simply dropped them in the slots I created previously.

Depending how things go this summer this bin could get a top!
